NEW DESIGNS

Macduff Ship Design Ltd is able to offer all of its designs as kits. These kits are produced using the latest 3 Dimensional surface modelling software which allows us to fully fair our hull models. From this faired hull model plate profiles can be extracted and this information is then used to produce a set of pre cut, pre numbered components which are supplied to the prospective builder in a 'flat pack' format. A full set of assembly plans are also supplied with the kit detailing the order in which the components are to be assembled. Macduff Ship Design Ltd have supplied profiling information for vessels from 8 to 60 metres.

The advantage of this type of construction is the tremendous accuracy that can be achieved with the profiles, this means that the builder has no lofting to do and no green material to trim from plates. It saves the builder time and money and the end result is a much fairer hull form. We also have the advantage that the steel profiles can be supplied from our sister company Macduff Profiles, thus keeping all the work under one roof, giving the shipyard only one point of contact, and allowing us to maintain greater control over the production of the kit.

This type of construction was used recently by a builder on the South coast of England. This particular builder had limited previous experience of kits, having traditionally used manual lofting techniques for the majority of their previous steel hulls. The following comments were relayed to us by the builder;

'…. The Macduff Ship Design Ltd kit is the best one that we have handled to date. It has been extremely easy to fabricate and the lines are superb. Building it has been a pleasure, and as a result we are well ahead of schedule, which is all down to the accuracy of the computer information and the subsequent cutting.'

Where builders have their own CNC cutting facilities Macduff Ship Design Ltd can supply the cutting information and assembly plans only. We would work with the builder to ensure that the plate sizes used in the kit were optimised to suit the burner dimensions. With the ease of transmitting cutting files over the internet we have successfully supplied cutting information for new vessels from Malaysia to Canada.

We are also able to use this technique to produce parts for conversion work on existing vessels. This allows for the new parts to be pre-fabricated to suit the new vessel prior  to the vessel stopping for work to be carried out, thus limiting costs of build on vessel down time. This technique has been successfully used to fit new above deck structures, new lengthened sections and sponsons to existing vessels.

OWNER DESIGNS

We have also produced kit parts for the production of vessels designed by third parties with three accommodation barges recently delivered to the Thames. The vessels were kitted from plans received from the architects who designed the vessels.
